• Vo2 Max is a test of how big your cardio “engine” is. It measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use for intense exercise. This biomarker is the most correlated with longevity and aerobic performance as it tells you how well your heart, lungs, and muscles work together.

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns at rest. Think of it as your baseline calorie burn without factoring in exercise or movement. If you are trying to lose fat or build muscle, knowing your RMR helps dial in your nutrition more effectively than using generic calculators.

  • Vo2 Max: This is a ramp up test with a short warm-up followed by incremental increases in intensity every minute until you decide to stop testing. The test will vary from 15-25 minutes depending on the person. While going as hard as you can will maximize your Vo2 Max score, there are plenty of people that prefer a 75% relative exertion test and the biomarker information gathered from that.

Resting Metabolic Rate: This test involves lying down on a yoga mat for 10 minutes with the breath analyzer mask on.

  • Vo2 Max and RMR tests are $149 each, or $249 for the bundle. If there are different price points for specific testing locations you will see the final price during the online check out process.

  • There is recurring availability at Foley’s Fitness you will see after clicking the “Book Now” button.

Testing can also be done at your home gym, hotel, track or studio for $399.

Occasionally there are pop-up testing days at different fitness facilities in New England, those will be featured on the website homepage and promoted on social media if it’s open to the public.

  • Vo2 Max: 45 minute reservation, ~25 minutes of actual exercise that ramps up over time in 1 minute intervals

Resting Metabolic Rate: 30 minute reservation, 10 minutes of actual testing laying down

  • Vo2 Max test: No exercise for 24 hours prior, come to the test well hydrated and with adequate nutrition and sleep for maximum aerobic exertion.

Resting Metabolic Rate test: No food, caffeine, alcohol or other substances for 8 hours prior.

  • All testing is done with the VO2 Master breath analyzer mask. For the Vo2 Max test, the default exercise equipment is a treadmill but it can be done on a bike or other equipment as well. The RMR test is done laying down on a yoga mat that is provided.

  • At the end of the day, the “o” in Vo2 stands for oxygen and there is going to be a much higher chance of accurate data using a breath analyzer mask with Upwave Labs since it has an oxygen sensor that directly measures how much oxygen is going in and coming out of your lungs each breath. Your smartwatch could be accurate, or it could be very inaccurate.
